South Australian Farmers – Drought Grants Are Coming!

Nov 27, 2024

As South Australia faces some of the driest conditions on record, the State Government has unveiled an $18 million drought support package to help farming communities stay resilient through these challenging times. At South Aussie Stock Troughs, we recognise the importance of these initiatives in ensuring farms remain operational and sustainable.

We’re here to assist farmers in making the most of these grants, particularly for on-farm water infrastructure that’s essential during prolonged dry spells.

What’s Included in the Drought Support Package?

The State Government’s comprehensive package is aimed at supporting both the immediate and long-term needs of farmers and rural communities. It includes:

1. On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Grants

Farmers can receive rebates of up to 75% (capped at $5,000) for projects that improve drought preparedness and management. These projects include:

  • Upgrading or installing water infrastructure (e.g., troughs, pipes, tanks)
  • Enhancing stock containment areas
    Other on-farm drought resilience measures
At South Aussie Stock Troughs, we specialise in water infrastructure solutions tailored to withstand drought conditions.
  • Whether you’re considering installing durable new troughs or upgrading your existing system, these grants are a perfect opportunity to invest in long-term water security for your farm.

2. Fodder Freight Assistance

With $2 million allocated to help charities cover freight costs for donated fodder, livestock farmers can access much-needed feed during this tough season. This initiative ensures animals stay healthy while reducing financial strain on farmers.

3. Mental Health and Community Support

  • $1 million for enhanced health and wellbeing services through the Rural Financial Counselling Service and the Family and Business Support (FaB) Program.
  • $4.4 million to continue funding FaB Mentors and Rural Financial Counsellors who offer free and confidential guidance to farmers navigating drought challenges.
  • $100,000 for community events through the Connecting Communities Events Program, fostering stronger connections during difficult times.

4. Future Drought Fund Contribution

A $5.5 million commitment to the Federal Government’s Future Drought Fund supports programs that equip farmers with climate tools, farm business resilience planning, and demonstrations of drought-resistant practices.

Why These Measures Matter

Drought resilience is not just about surviving the current season but ensuring that farms are prepared for the future. The combination of grants for infrastructure, support for mental health, and investments in innovative farming practices reflects a holistic approach to drought management.

At South Aussie Stock Troughs, we see water as the backbone of any drought preparedness strategy. Investing in efficient, durable, and sustainable water infrastructure ensures livestock remain healthy, reduces waste, and protects farm operations during prolonged dry conditions.

Hear from the SA Premier:

“The impacts of drought and adverse conditions are being felt far and wide across South Australia’s farming communities. Our investments include financial assistance for on-farm infrastructure and additional support for health and wellbeing services and initiatives which unite communities. This significant package is also investing in farmers to drought proof their properties and grow their business resilience planning for a sustainable future.”
